Swingin’ at the Savoy 2018 is here! Welcome!

Hello, and thank you for being part of Swingin’ at the Savoy 2018!

We are so incredibly excited about our event this year. We wanted to send a few notes out to let you know what to expect and make sure everyone has the best possible time. This is a bit long but please try to read it through.

CODE OF CONDUCT
We care about the well being of all of our participants and we want everyone to be respectful of their fellow dancers. Please read and follow our code of conduct and be the best human you can be. If something happens that makes you uncomfortable, come and talk to us or contact us (see options for help here).

  • SATURDAY CONSENT DISCUSSION – 12noon
Participate in a consent discussion headed by Nicole Zuckerman.

EXPECTATIONS & SELF-CARE
You signed up for our event and for that we are grateful. We put a tremendous amount of work into making the event happen. We designed it so that it would be a highlight in your dance journey, a chance to meet dance legends, a chance to learn from world-class instructors, a chance to listen and dance to the sound of incredible musicians, a chance to meet new fellow dancers, a chance for magical moments to happen on the dance floor. We also know the event is strenuous on body and mind. Maybe you get tired, dehydrated, or hungry, you hit a setback. When it happens, take some time to pause, maybe take a deep breath, and see what you can do to make the best of your weekend. We hope you will also experience epiphany moments in class or incredible partnership moments on the social dance floor. Take a moment to savor them when they happen.

  • FRIDAY ORIENTATION – 8:30pm
We have added an orientation session to talk about how to make the best of your weekend. We encourage everyone taking workshop classes to attend it.

LAKE MERRITT DANCE RULES
We are incredibly lucky to be able to hold the day time event at Lake Merritt Dance in Oakland. Drink or eat outside or in the hallway, and be respectful of this fantastic space.

  • There is a strict no food/water/water bottles in the Grand Ballroom policy.

WRISTBANDS
You will be given a wristband at the front desk when you check in.Please wear the wristband on one of your wrists. You will be asked to show your wristband as necessary by our staff. We need them to quickly identify what pass you signed up for.

  • Do not remove your wristband until the pass you signed for is over. Keep it overnight if it’s a multi-day pass.

EVENT SCHEDULE
You can find the event schedule here. There will be large panels at the event with class/dance schedules, as well as a paper handout. The program handout PDF is available here.

Track group descriptions are available here.

NEWCOMERS SPECIAL

This track is for you if…

You are fairly new to Lindy Hop, or have only taken a handful of classes. This is your first Lindy Hop workshop weekend. You’re looking to learn a lot and have a lot of fun. This track will provide just the right amount of classes.

It is a more affordable track perfect for new dancers. The track will be taught by instructors Adam Brozowski & Joshua Mclean.

PARTNERED SWING DANCING ROLES

Partnered swing dancing is a role-based dance. There is a leader and there is a follower. Both partners contribute equally to the dance, but in different ways. The leader is the one usually initiating movement and thinking about the dance in terms of shapes. The follower interprets the lead and moves accordingly, adding their own contributions to the dance. The dancers send each other cues about their movements and intentions through their connection as well as visually. The dance becomes an unspoken conversation between the dancers.
