Jazz Basics – Shim Sham
Rebecca Shannon
The Shim Sham Shimmy evolved from a tap dance routine in the late 1920’s into a line dance performed by Lindy Hoppers worldwide. In this class we’ll learn the classic version with jazz steps every Lindy Hopper should know. All levels are welcome.

Tap
Chester Whitmore
Never have done tap? Tried taking an adult class and given up? Curious? We’ve got you covered. Chester will break it down for you tap newbies. Come join the crowd and maybe you will even jump in when a tap jam starts in the corner. Soft shoes only.
The One Step
Trevor and Julie
The One Step (a.k.a: the Turkey Trot, Bunny Hug, Grizzly Bear) is a dance that originated in the early 1900s and is often done to Ragtime music. At the Savoy and other ballrooms across the country, there were two dances done: the One Step, and the Two Step (also known as the Lindy Hop). All the Lindy greats knew how to One Step, and Frankie Manning speaks in his book as to how they would race along the outside of the floor dancing the One Step and then would finish up the song with some Lindy Hop. This class will show you how to dance the One Step, get you cruisin’ around the dance floor with ease, and help you integrate these cool new variations into your Lindy Hop.
Dance History Lecture
Richard Powers
The Evolution of Swing, from San Francisco to the Savoy to the World. Richard’s talk will include video clips of the earliest versions, plus a look into the mindset of early swing.
Jazz History Lecture
Alisa Clancy
Decades before before disco, mosh pits, slam dancing, and hip hop (you remember don’t cha?) the dancers of the 1930′s were sweating off pounds nearly every night in the clubs of Harlem where Chick Webb’s Band would battle Lunceford’s at The Savoy, and unknown singers would turn out to be Ella Fitzgeralds and Sarah Vaughns. When musicians could actually make a living playing music without day jobs(!) and the black music, art and culture were entertwined in daily life and celebrated in That Harlem Vibe. Alex Protopopescu providing the visuals.
